God’s saints, like the truest and kindest of friends, are ready to help in a moment

GOD’S saints are near to believing hearts and, like the truest and kindest of friends, are ready in a moment to help the faithful and pious who call upon them with faith and love.

We have for the most part to send, and have sometimes to wait long for earthly helpers, whilst we have not to send for nor wait long for spiritual helpers: the faith of Him who prays can place them close to his very heart in a moment, and he will as speedily receive through faith full spiritual help.

“God's saints are near to believing hearts.” Saints and angels depicted on the iconostasis of the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of Saint Sophia, London. The Annunciation of Gabriel to Mary is shown on the central doors.

REMEMBERING the words of the honourable Gabriel, we cry out the “Hail” unto thee, O Pure Lady; but O thou who art immaculate, worthy of reverence, and the mother of the Lord, who hath been carried over to him: keep remembrance of them that sing hymns unto thee.

The boundless Wisdom of God, O Birth-giver of God, built a dwelling for herself from thee, in the Holy Spirit; and now he hath carried thee over to immaterial tabernacles, thou who art the song of all.

As a suppliant I now approach thee, the mother of the God of all, to be redeemed from temptations of every kind; but O thou that brought forth God, who art present together with thy son, guard the people of the Christians.

Vespers for August 19. Original at Analogion.

O VIRGIN Mother of God – Hail, Mary full of grace
The Lord is with thee;
Blessed art thou among women,
And blessed is the fruit of thy womb:
For thou gavest birth to the Saviour of our Souls.
