TODAY is the feast of the Synaxis of the Archangel Michael and the other Bodiless Powers: Gabriel, Raphael, Uriel, Salaphiel, Jegudiel, and Barachiel.
THE eternal Mind established thee, O Gabriel, as a second light, lighting the whole world with participation in divine gifts, and revealing unto us the divine and truly great mystery which is from everlasting: the bodiless one embodied in the Virgin’s womb, and becoming man in order to save man.
Standing beside the throne of the Godhead, the threefold sun, and richly shining (with the divine radiance which is poured forth unceasingly there) upon those who praise thee in choral harmony, redeem us from the fog of the passions, and make us radiant with illumination, O Gabriel, chief captain, intercessor for our souls.
Shatter the assaults of Hagar’s children, which continually come upon your flock; abate the schisms of the Church; calm the swell of temptations without measure; deliver from dangers and troubles those who honour you with longing, O Gabriel Chief Captain, intercessor for our souls.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.
REJOICE with us, all ye commanders of the Angels; for to our wonder, your leader and our champion, the great Chief Captain, appeareth this very day in his sacred shrine, sanctifying it; therefore as is right let us cry out to him with songs of praise: Shelter us in the shelter of your wings, Michael greatest of Archangels!
Now and forever, and to the ages of ages.
REJOICE with us, all ye choirs of virgins; for to our wonder, our protection, intermediary, shelter and great refuge appeareth this very day in her sacred shrine, sanctifying it; therefore as is right let us cry out to her with song of praise: Shelter us in the shelter of your wings, immaculate Lady, Theotokos.
Then shall be sung the hymn, O Joyful Light.
Mikhail Ippolitov-Ivanov (1859-1935)
O JOYFUL light of the holy glory
of the immortal, heavenly, holy, blessed Father,
O Jesus Christ.
Now that we have come to the setting of the sun
and see the evening light,
we sing the praise of God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
It is right at all times to hymn thee with holy voices,
Son of God, giver of life:
therefore doth the world glorify thee.
