THIS very night was Christ born, but the world took it not to heart,
Not the world, nor the world of men, nor Herod the King.

And there where Christ lay, a golden tree-shoot grew,
A golden tree, a golden branch, a little golden pearl.

The tree was Christ, the branches the Apostles,
Its little red and white flowers the prophets.

They it was who foretold and spoke of the Passion of Christ.
And would we but sing Christ’s praises, Christ would watch over us.

As many as the stars of heaven, as many as the leaves on the little trees,
So many would be the blessings that God would grant to the master of this house.

Sung by Nektaria Karantzi. This is my translation.
