GABRIEL is the angel who appeared to the Blessed Virgin Mary, and foretold the birth of Jesus Christ.
AND the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God. And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.
He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.
Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man? And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.
And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren. For with God nothing shall be impossible.
And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.
Gospel According to St Luke, Chapter 1, verses 26-38.
His Feasts are March 26 (the day after we commemorate the Annunciation to Mary) and July 13. He is also remembered on November 8, the Synaxis of the Bodiless Powers.
A Hymn To The Archangels
YE Chief Captains of the heavenly hosts,
we the unworthy beseech you, that by your prayers,
ye would fence us round under the protection of your wings,
guarding us with the brightness of your glory,
who falling down cry out entreatingly,
Redeem us from dangers, as ye are Commanding Officers of the Powers above.
Hymns To Gabriel
GABRIEL, commander of the heavenly hosts,
we who are unworthy beseech you,
by your prayers encompass us beneath the wings of your immaterial glory,
and faithfully preserve us who fall down and cry to you:
“Deliver us from all harm, for you are the commander of the powers on high!”
SUPREME commander Gabriel,
you are the glorious intercessor and servant
before the all-radiant, worthy, all-powerful, infinite and awesome Trinity.
Ever pray now that we may be delivered from all tribulations and torments,
so that we may cry out to you:
“Rejoice, protection of your servants!”
The name “Gabriel’s Message” for this blog comes from the name often given to a Mediaeval carol from the Basque region of Spain, “Birjina gaztetto bat zegoen”.
