ELDER THADDAEUS Strabulovich (1914-2003) was a spiritual father in the Serbian Orthodox Church. He became a monk at the age of eighteen, joining a Russian monastery which, following the Communist Revolution, was populated by many exiled monks from the famous Optina Monastery.
In the ‘fifties, Thaddaeus moved from monastery to monastery, finding a settled home at Vitovnica, where he became one of the best-loved of Serbian spiritual fathers.
In the video above, the Elder speaks of the love, joy and peace which comes from constant inner prayer, and goes on to provide some insightful observations on the way depression can be dreadfully contagious and extremely destructive, unless grace and unconditional love step in to break the cycle. The interview is conducted in Serbian, but there are subtitles in English, and anyway all you really need to do is watch his expression.
Elder Thaddaeus reposed on April 16 2003.
WE can keep guard over the whole world by keeping guard over the atmosphere of heaven within us; for if we lose the Kingdom of Heaven, we will save neither ourselves nor others. He who has the Kingdom of God within himself will imperceptibly pass it on to others. People will be attracted to the peace and warmth in us; they will want to hear us, and the atmosphere of heaven will gradually pass on to them. It is not even necessary to speak to people about this. The atmosphere of heaven will radiate from us even when we keep silent, or talk about ordinary things. It will radiate from us even though we may not be aware of it.
